8 min read

As an EU/EEA citizen, you have the right to live and work in Denmark and Sweden. The process is straightforward but there are important steps to follow for a smooth transition.

Before Departure

  • Ensure your passport or national ID is valid for the duration of your stay
  • Secure a job offer, university admission, or proof of sufficient funds
  • Research cities and neighborhoods — use Movinn's city guides
  • Book temporary furnished housing with Movinn
  • Arrange travel health insurance (EHIC card is valid temporarily)
  • Gather apostilled copies of birth/marriage certificates
  • Notify your home country's tax authority

First Week in Denmark

  • Register at the International Citizen Service (ICS) for your CPR number
  • Apply for an EU Registration Certificate (EU-opholdsdokument)
  • Register your address at your municipality (Borgerservice)
  • Open a Danish bank account once CPR is issued
  • Register for NemID/MitID digital identity
  • Sign up with a GP through sundhed.dk
  • Get a Rejsekort for public transport

First Week in Sweden

  • Register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) for your personnummer
  • If staying 12+ months, apply for folkbokföring (population registration)
  • Open a Swedish bank account (requires personnummer)
  • Register for BankID digital identity
  • Sign up with a local vårdcentral (healthcare center)
  • Get a Jojo/SL card for public transport

Ongoing Administration

  • File taxes in your new country (and potentially your home country for the transition year)
  • Transfer pensions and social security if applicable
  • Update your address with your embassy
  • Register to vote in local/EU elections (optional)
  • Enroll in language classes — free in both Denmark (sprogskole) and Sweden (SFI)
